Tourist information and useful contacts
Craiova does not have a prominent walk-in tourist office in the way the Transylvanian cities do. In practice your hotel, the museum desks and this site cover what one would.
Being straight about this
Craiova is not set up for walk-in tourist information the way Brașov or Sibiu are. There is no prominent office on the main square handing out maps, and we are not going to send you to an address we cannot confirm is open.
What works instead:
Your accommodation. The most reliable source for anything local and current — which pharmacy is open, whether a museum is closed today, how to get a taxi at midnight.
The museum desks. The Art Museum and the Oltenia Museum will answer questions about their own opening and about the city.
The city hall's own channels for anything about the Christmas market, street closures or public events. They are where the market dates and programme are announced, and they are the place to confirm hours we have not been able to date.
Useful numbers
- 112 — police, ambulance, fire. Free from any phone, answered in Romanian and English.
- Your accommodation — for a doctor, a pharmacy or a taxi at an awkward hour.
What this site tries to cover instead
The practical pages here exist because the information is not easy to find locally: getting here, getting around, what it costs, the weather month by month, and the day trips with every distance measured rather than estimated.
Where we could not verify something — a museum's hours, a cave's ticket price, a monastery's programme — the page says so and gives you the phone number instead of a guess. That is the whole editorial method, and it is stated on about.
