What it means for a visit
Banks and offices close; museums, restaurants and most shops in the centre stay open, but check individual opening hours on the day. The real effect is on crowds: long weekends — Easter, 1 May, Pentecost, 1 December, the days between Christmas and New Year — bring Bucharest up the Prahova Valley. Book hotels and restaurants well ahead, and expect DN1 to be at its worst on the first and last day. See getting here.
1 December, the National Day, matters more here than in most cities: it falls inside the Christmas market season and makes the single busiest weekend of the Craiova year. See events.
