The story
The equestrian statue at the head of Piața Mihai Viteazul, and the one piece of national statuary in Romania that is in exactly the right town.
Michael the Brave was Ban of Craiova before he became Prince of Wallachia in 1593 — the office that governed Oltenia from this city and ranked first among the boyars of the principality, immediately after the ruling prince himself. He then went on to the brief union of the three principalities that made him the central figure of Romanian national historiography.
So he is not here as a symbol imported into a provincial square to lend it weight. He is here because he worked here, and the square is named for him for the same reason. The Bănia and the money explains the office he held, including the question of whether the Romanian word for money comes from the title — it does, but not in the direction most people are told.
